To make a tincture, herbs are macerated in alcohol for a period of time to release their soluble constituents. The solid parts are then sieved out of the infused alcohol which is then diluted with water to lower the alcohol level. This leaves behind a high quality, concentrated herbal extract suitable for home use.
Alcohol is used to extend the storage life of the concentrate and in contrast to an infusion which uses water; a correctly stored tincture will last for many years without losing its efficacy. Storage is not difficult; simply keep it out of direct sunlight and away from extreme heat. Some tinctures will develop a little sediment over time, this is perfectly natural, simply shake the bottle before use to re-mix the tincture.
If you have a medical condition and are looking for alternative medicines, we recommend that you contact a registered herbalist for a consultation and for advice. All herbs should be taken in moderation and we advise you to seek advice from a herbal practitioner before starting to use any new herbs. We recommend that you do not take herbal products during pregnancy. To find a practitioner in your area please contact the National Institute of Medical Herbalists.
